Borderlands is quite simply the best marriage of FPS and Diablo-style RPG, like, ever. I used to be a Hellgate fanboy but this game totally makes me forget the dreary old streets of London and I haven't missed the spell tossers and Templar since.
Quite simply, what it sets out to do it does right. I'm tired of all the Fallout 3 fanboys bitching that this game lacks depth. Of course it lacks depth: It's more emphasis on the shoot & loot over the plot. The game also is trying to maintain a sense of style and attitude which it does greatly.
The biggest gripe I hear from others is the repeated use of the same mobs. Quite frankly, even though you'll kill more Bandits like the cover-box guy then you'll ever care to in your life, each one acts quite differently and there's even variation of attitudes between the different kinds of bandits. Some will go kamikaze and run out guns a blazin, others will actually duck behind cover and lob grenades at you. And to be honest, I'm not sick of killing these guys.
The multiplayer is a RIOT but can be a royal pain in the ass to setup. This game blows when "PuGgging" so do yourself a favor and get like a dozen friends (or at least 3) who also have this game. For the PC version, definitely save yourself some heartache and download Game Ranger for matchmaking with your friends as the port forwarding issues pretty much is a nightmare. Despite the pain in the ass it is to setup, once you get over the hosting hurdles the game plays awesome with 4 peeps and supplies many more baddies and good drops for you and your buddies.
To be honest, the only thing that makes me sad is how relatively short the game is. I haven't beaten it yet but it seems we're getting close to end game; there's already lots of people playing on their second playthroughs which means depending on your game style, this game may be too brief. The good news is 2nd play through lets you continue your toons through the game with much harder mobs, so that's bonus. And on the 24th of November, we're already getting some DLC add on content to extend game life.
One quick note: It has dueling but overall this is NOT a competetive shooter/RPG. This game is all about the co-op of you and your buddies mowing down tons of assholes and getting better guns. It's fun as hell though, and definitely recommended for peeps who want another game to pick up and kill some evenings with while staving off MMO burnout.
